Knee pain is a common issue for people in our San Jose, CA chiropractic practice, and Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran has successfully provided many of these people relief. This is largely because chiropractic care has been found to help with many types of knee pain.
For example, some people experience pain in and around the knee tissues due to osteoarthritis. Research has proven that this condition responds very well to chiropractic--and rather quickly, too. In fact, one study published in The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association found that men and women with osteoarthritis in their knees felt considerable pain relief and improved function after just two weeks of chiropractic care.
If your knee pain is as a result of a medial meniscus tear, chiropractic could likely help with that as well. One article found that combining chiropractic with soft tissue treatment, rest, ice, and compression on the affected knee helped lower the intensity of the pain.
Of course, sometimes a knee replacement surgery is required in order to rectify the problem, and if that's the case, chiropractic care can also help improve the outcome. How?
Medical research has shown that people with low back pain often have less positive results after knee surgery. Therefore, dealing with your back pain through chiropractic before having a total knee arthroplasty can assist with your post-surgery recovery.
No matter what your knee issue, Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran can likely help. Call our San Jose, CA office today and find out what we can do for you!

We see a lot of individuals with headaches in our San Jose, CA office, and Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran has been able to assist many of them. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 50 percent of all adults struggle with some manner of headache condition, so this actually isn’t unexpected. One of the most frequent types of headaches that our patients struggle with is cervicogenic headache which, luckily, chiropractic can often help.
What is a Cervicogenic Headache?
A cervicogenic headache is one that starts from problems in the cervical spine. It could be attributable to a problem with either the spine itself (specifically, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it may be a result of a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine produces compression or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can contribute to headache pain.
How can you distinguish if the headache you are feeling is a cervicogenic headache? Aside from receiving a diagnosis from a healthcare specialist, a frequent symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is sometimes followed by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.
How Chiropractic Helps with Cervicogenic Headaches
Seeing that cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever problem is initiating them is remedied, it is vital to get treatment rather than just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective approach, and one that can provide a great deal of relief.
In one study circulated in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers looked at 80 people who had recurring cervicogenic headaches. Half of them got chiropractic care and the other half underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was found that chiropractic provided the best effects.
Specifically, this study revealed that chiropractic adjustments provided patients enhanced pain relief and diminished the number of headaches that occurred. Moreover, it also mitigated the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.

We see many patients in our San Jose, CA office with ankle sprains but Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran has had a lot of success helping them heal more quickly. Why are ankle sprains so common and how can chiropractic care help?
According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), approximately 25,000 people in the US sprain their ankles every day. As a matter of fact, these injuries make up almost half of all sports injuries, causing people to spend time away from the activities they enjoy most.
Like most any injury, there are many causes of ankle sprains. The most frequent is inversion, or when the ankle rolls inward. This injury can occur due to one forceful movement, or it can develop over time, and activities that increase the risk for this type of ankle sprain include running and jumping. You're also at risk if you have previous ankle injuries, poor posture or balance, weak muscles, and reduced range of motion. How can Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran help?
A report published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics set out to determine chiropractic's role when it comes to ankle sprain recovery. The authors enrolled 33 individuals between the ages of 18 and 45 who had a history of ankle inversion sprains, who were reporting tenderness and/or pain, and had not re-injured the ankle in the previous six weeks.
Eighteen of the participants were assigned to participate in rehabilitation and the remaining 15 individuals received chiropractic adjustments in addition to rehab. Each person had five full weeks of treatment, with the rehab group receiving treatment seven days a week and the rehab plus chiropractic group receiving care six out of the seven days.
The authors found that the people who participated in both rehab and chiropractic fared the best at the 4-week mark when it came to pain and joint restriction. Furthermore, no adverse effects were reported, showing that chiropractic is safe.

If you suffer with fibromyalgia, you are not alone, as Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran sees many people with this particular problem in our San Jose, CA chiropractic office. Actually, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that roughly two percent of all adults in the United States have fibromyalgia. Fortunately, chiropractic care is one treatment option that can provide positive results.
In a study released in mid-2015, 215 adults with fibromyalgia were assessed based on factors ranging from pain to quality of sleep to the levels of depression and anxiety they felt. Then they were split into two groups with one group receiving a multi-modal treatment program for three months and the second group receiving the same program with the addition of chiropractic adjustments (specifically, to the upper neck tissues) for the same length of time.
The individuals who received chiropractic adjustments in addition to the multi-disciplinary treatment approach reported greater benefits in all areas (pain, sleep, depression, and anxiety) at three months post-treatment when compared to the study patients who received multi-modal therapy without chiropractic. Furthermore, those positive benefits were lasting as the patients reported continued improvement one full year later.
Fibromyalgia can significantly decrease your quality of life, both mentally and physically. If you're suffering from fibromyalgia, we might be able to help.

Regrettably, many of our San Jose, CA patients are familiar with the pain caused by a herniated disc all too well. Fortunately, Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of scientific studies have verified that chiropractic care can help people recover from this kind of condition.
Research on Chiropractic for Disc Herniations
In one report, a group of doctors from Switzerland recruited 148 patients who were suffering with pain in their lower back and legs due to a herniated disc (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each person then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the area of his or her disc herniation.
Results were gathered after the preliminary treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to determine what type of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic care offers when it comes to treating this particular problem. Among the information collected was the person's self-reported changes in both lumbar and leg pain.
The authors found that, as a whole, the patients reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the study participants reported that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.
Even those people who were defined as "chronic" still reported an improvement in pain at a rate of 89% one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive result that was found in the following case study.
Case Study Results
In this study, a 26-year-old man had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the low back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had suffered with these symptoms for more than two years after sustaining a sports injury, and his herniated disc was confirmed via MRI.
After receiving chiropractic, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." In addition, the patient was still experiencing relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.
Studies like these show how helpful chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and relieving the symptoms they produce. So, if you are suffering from back pain caused by a herniated disc and wish to find some relief, chiropractic may be an effective solution.

Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran sees a lot of patients struggling with carpal tunnel syndrome in our busy San Jose, CA chiropractic practice. While some people think that the origin of this wrist-related pain is muscular, it's really a syndrome that arises from the nerves--and not just the nerves in your hands.
A recent study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy assessed 71 women between the ages of 35 and 59 who were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. Upon studying the subjects' neck range of motion, the doctors found that the women had reduced cervical mobility when compared to a healthy control group.
Furthermore, they also discovered that the level of the women's reported carpal tunnel pain was connected to the lateral flexion of the cervical spine. In short, the less mobility in the neck, the higher the level of pain.
This research is extremely important, as you cannot successfully resolve a problem until you fully understand its source. By recognizing that the root of carpal tunnel pain is in the neck, this means that all-natural approaches like chiropractic can often restore normal function, reducing the need for risky surgical procedures.
If you have carpal tunnel pain, call our San Jose, CA office and ask how Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran can help you get relief!

We see a number of people with back pain in our San Jose, CA practice, and Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran has helped a lot of them get relief with chiropractic. However, recovering from back problems doesn't necessarily mean having to decide between chiropractic care and medical care, as many individuals use both types of care with great outcomes.
Research Confirms Chiropractic and Medical Care Work Well with One Another
In a report published by the journal Spine researchers1 looked at a group of active-duty military personnel between the ages of 18 and 35 who reported both acute discomfort and restricted function due to back symptoms. Some of the test subjects received treatment via standard medical care, while the rest were given chiropractic care together with regular medical care, as researchers wanted to see which patients fared better.
The authors determined that the group that got standard medical care combined with chiropractic scored "significantly better" than the patients who received medical care alone; 73% reported positive benefits in comparison to just 17 percent of the medical treatment only group who indicated the same amount of improvement. This was true regarding both pain and level of function at the two- and four-week marks.
Therefore, integrating these two forms of care can greatly benefit you--the patient--offering benefits when compared to medical care alone. However, while chiropractic and medicine can work alongside each other, chiropractic offers some unique advantages over medical treatment.
Where Chiropractic Wins
Although it may seem as if each method plays a 50/50 role, there is one major advantage that chiropractic has over medical care and that is in patient satisfaction. In fact, one bit of research done at UCLA2 that was published in the American Journal of Public Health found that, on average, chiropractic patients are generally more satisfied with their recovery than people undergoing medical treatment.
According to the researchers, the main factors that patients favored over medical treatment were "self-care advice and explanation of treatment." This isn't surprising, as chiropractors frequently spend much more time advising their patients as to how they can improve their health on their own, as well as outlining more carefully what to expect from chiropractic.
Chiropractic Is a Natural Approach to Wellness
Without a doubt, the techniques associated with chiropractic are quite different than those available with medical care, but a large amount of the distinction is the fact that chiropractic is a holistic approach to health and well-being. Rather than focusing on just relieving the symptoms, chiropractic care means tracking down the primary cause of your pain, which often results in greater improvement as you are tackling the problem at its source.
Furthermore, while medication is sometimes helpful for treating certain conditions, many health issues respond well to a natural approach such as chiropractic care. This means fewer negative responses to drugs and longer-lasting recovery.

We treat many auto injury cases in in our San Jose, CA office, and a widespread symptom we see in our patients is shoulder pain. Chiropractic care is a great way to treat shoulder pain. Let's look at how shoulder pain is caused by a crash and how Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran can help you.
There are at least two ways that you can develop shoulder pain after a crash: by direct injury to the shoulder joint or by referred pain from the neck.
Direct trauma can be caused by striking your shoulder on a hard surface in the car during the crash, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end collision. With this type of injury, you'll usually be aware of the pain soon after the crash.
More frequently, Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran finds that shoulder or arm pain does not immediately appear after a collision, but starts a few days or weeks after the trauma. This type of shoulder pain actually starts in the cervical spine. Injured muscles or ligaments in your spine can pinch nerves in your neck, causing tingling, numbness, or soreness in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.
We've worked with both kinds of shoulder problems in our San Jose, CA office. This care involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural mobility and exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.
You don't have to suffer from shoulder pain. Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran is conveniently located in San Jose, CA to help you heal, whether you've been in an auto collision or not. The first step is to get an accurate diagnosis to determine what's causing your symptoms and then we will determine an appropriate treatment strategy. Asthma is a significant issue for many people in San Jose, CA and for society as a whole, truly, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that this condition currently affects almost 19 million adults and 7 million children in the US. A full-blown asthma attack likely means a emergency room visit. Fortunately, Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran has helped many people in San Jose, CA get relief from asthma symptoms.
The scientific literature confirms what we see in our practice. For instance, a study published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy evaluated 31 adult asthma patients after receiving four weeks of chiropractic adjustments. The authors found that the individuals who received chiropractic adjustments had a 34% decrease in asthma symptoms.
The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics printed another asthma-based study, except this one involved kids. In this report, the 36 patients ranged from 6 to 17 years in age and their asthma was considered either mild or moderate in severity.
After 12 weeks of chiropractic care, as a whole, the patients reported a higher quality of life and a lower level of severity. As a bonus, they also reported that they relied less on their bronchodilator and these positive effects were still being demonstrated one year after chiropractic care was complete.
So, whether you're 8 or 80, if you have symptoms of asthma, be sure to contact Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran in San Jose, CA and schedule an appointment today. We'll do what we can to help you breathe easier!

We see a large number of patients in our San Jose, CA office, and Drs. Hung Lam & Loan Tran has helped countless people manage a wide array of health challenges. However, a common concern that seems to stop a lot of women and men from getting treatment is whether or not chiropractic is safe. Fortunately, according to three different studies (out of countless on the topic), the answer to this concern is a resounding: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"
Chiropractic is Safe, According to Australian Study
The first research paper(1) was published in Spine and included 183 adults between the ages of 20 and 85. Each person reported suffering from some kind of back pain, and half of the people received actual chiropractic care visits whereas the other half received two fake chiropractic treatment sessions. Data was gathered after each real or fake adjustment to discover if any unpleasant reactions were caused by the actual chiropractic adjustments.
Researchers reported that no one documented any significant negative side effects at all after getting one or two sessions of chiropractic care. Some individuals did state that they experienced a headache (9 percent) or muscle stiffness (37%) post-treatment, but the results were not of a serious nature.
National Survey Confirms that Chiropractic Adjustments are Safe
The next study(2), also published in the distinguished medical journal, Spine, was conducted in an effort to establish the safety of chiropractic care. The study group was much larger -- 20,000 people. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the neck, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all study participants.
Again, the researchers found no serious adverse side effects. The experts determined the risk of total side effects to be about six out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the previous study, some people did report non-serious, milder, unwanted effects such as dizziness (about 1.6%) or a headache (4%), and this caused the researchers to conclude that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."
Chiropractic Care Is Safe for Children
The third research paper(3) is different from the first two reports, as it concentrates on the safety of chiropractic care for kids. In this article, the authors investigated results reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic adjustments.
Out of 5,438 chiropractic appointments made for the young children, chiropractors responding to the survey reported only three cases where there were adverse effects. When parents were surveyed, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Furthermore, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."
Based on studies like these, chiropractic has been deemed safe and effective for everyone. To find out what chiropractic care can do for you, call our San Jose, CA clinic and schedule an appointment today at (408) 293-0396.
